Fraxel is an amazing treatment that uses laser technology to help remove years off your appearance. With age our skin gets older, and more damaged. Therefore, many women and men are turning to this revolutionary treatment in order to rejuvenate their skin.
Fraxel is the pioneer of “fractional photothermolysis,” a technology where thousands of microscopic laser columns - each just one-tenth the diameter of a hair follicle - treat a fraction of the skin at a time without affecting the surrounding tissue. These laser columns stimulate the production of younger, smoother, healthier skin to replace damaged tissue.
As stated earlier Fraxel rejuvenates the skin. Therefore, it can be used for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, repair sun damaged skin, freckles, age spots, acne, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and other skin problems that come with age. In general Fraxel can help with the skin’s tone and texture as whole. It can also help with certain cases of melisma, and reduce precancerous lesions by replacing sun damaged skin with new skin. It does not only have to be used on the face as often times patients get treated on the hands, neck, and shoulders are treated. Each treatment replaces about 15-20% of the sun damaged, scarred or wrinkled skin. It triggers the body’s natural healing process accelerating the production of collagen and new, healthy skin cells.
When patients receive this treatment the number one way they describe it is as a sensation of heat. To minimize discomfort during the procedure we provide a topical anesthetic. Cooling is also built in on the hand piece to minimize the hot feeling. After treatment most people feel like they have a sunburn that usually diminishes in 1 to 3 hours.
A series of treatments (generally 3-5) are performed, usually one every 3-8 weeks. The benefits of fractional laser treatments are achieved with little discomfort and minimal risk. Usually each treatment takes 20 to 25 minutes for a full face, and additional time for the anesthetic application. We recommend arriving about an hour before treatment so the technician will be able to cleanse the treatment area and apply numbing cream.
The length of Fraxel results primarily depends on the patient’s condition prior to treatment, and how they take care of their skin post treatment. Once the skin is treated, continue to protect the surface as instructed by our Doctor. For those being treated for conditions such as melisma, one should be extra careful to avoid direct sun exposure. Sun exposure should be avoided by all patients directly after treatment, and applying sunscreen is extremely important. Avoid tanning booths, and if you are careful with your skin your new look will not require as much maintenance. How long does the Fraxel take to work? When will I see results? Usually our patients notice results a week after the first treatment! Patients can expect smoother skin that is less pigmented. Patients also tend to describe their skin as “glowing.”
Luckily you can! With fillers like Botox, and Restylane you only have to wait one week after having Fraxel done. For a treatment like Sculptra it is best to have Fraxel treatments first, or you will need to wait 3 months after your last Scultpra injection to begin Fraxel treatment.
